The New Mayor Promises a 'New Era' for New York City in First Speech
On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.
The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
An Ambitious Blueprint
Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:
- Free childcare
- Free buses
- A rent freeze for about 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Challenges
The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past tweets.
Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.
The Basic Tests of Leadership

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
