Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
