Earth is facing challenges, yet a sense of hope remains. A new award from the interdisciplinary festival the Starmus festival aims to motivate individuals to take action.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name will honor in honour of the esteemed scientist and conservationist who died recently. It will recognise those who advocate for life on Earth.

The Medal's Framework

The first recipients are expected to be announced during the upcoming Starmus event in the Canary Islands, scheduled from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

Reports indicate that Goodall, a former Starmus advisory board member, had backed the medal's establishment. “The vision behind this award, and the festival being tasked with organising it, was Jane's wish,” a representative said. “She expressed she would like for this to occur. And I think because of the unique bond she shared with us.”

“This medal aims to highlight ongoing initiatives carried out to create a planet a better place for people, animals and the environment and foster motivation to carry on such efforts,” said a family member.

Format and Inspiration

A co-founder of Starmus noted that the medal – which was announced at a prestigious venue – would probably have multiple categories.

“The intent is for it to be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking award for science communication established a decade past,” he explained. Jane Goodall was a recipient of that award.

Sharing thoughts on the outlook for Earth, one figure said, “Frankly, it's challenging to be optimistic. Present governance globally is conducting an assault on knowledge. So this really cripples global initiatives.”

“Realistically, the prospects aren't very good which means we need to really start thinking again, more deeply about the consequences of our actions. And that’s not just climate change, that’s the entire manner in which we interact with the natural world.”

A Call to Action

Consequently, observers believe this is an opportune moment to follow Jane Goodall's legacy. “I think that in bestowing this medal, the focus will be on this core philosophy of Jane’s – that was her priority, to transform the way we treat fellow creatures around us.”

Another key issue currently is the proliferation of disinformation. The focus of the upcoming festival is set as “the search for truth”.

“It has become apparent that factual reality has become a matter of debate when politics is involved. This is a perilous development,” he commented. “The science of climate remains a scientific discipline; it is impossible to have any influence from politics in this field.”

Optimism and Resolve

The aspiration remains that the medal will spur concrete steps. “The purpose is motivating others to get involved and to show concern and to work toward these goals, truly. Whether or not we’re optimistic, we must look at working our utmost,” it was added. “Be prepared for setbacks, yet we must continue striving to achieve positive outcomes.”

A family member engaged in environmental protection expressed hope that “with guidance and once enabled, humanity are capable of being conscientious guardians of Earth”, citing the initiatives of an institute which, in addition to its projects, empowers young people get involved with their community, wildlife, and the natural world.

“As Jane Goodall constantly reminded us, our daily actions make a difference and the responsibility lies with us what type of impact we choose to create,” it was stated. “It is not too late and this medal will provide inspiration and increase understanding about beneficial initiatives that are being undertaken.”
